La Poesia de la Comida
This project is about experiencing food from Spanish speaking countries. In this project I picked out a country (Colombia) and chose a specialty plate that is found in that country. Also, we all had to write odes along with our recipes. These odes were to a food item used in the recipe or to our recipe directly. When the project was finished, I had a completed ode and a final recipe.

Arepas de Queso
1 cup arepa flour/ 1 taza masarepa
1 cup hot water/ 1 taza agua caliente
2 tablespoons butter, softened/ 2 chucharada mantequilla
1.5 teaspoon salt/ 1.5 cucharillas sal
1 egg yolk/ 1 yema de huevo
8 ounces grated cheese)/ 8 onzas rallado queso
2 tablespoons butter
or vegetable oil for cooking the arepas/ 2 chucharada mantequilla o aceite

Mix the arepa flour with the salt. Add the hot
water and stir until well mixed.
• Mezcla masarepa con la sal. Añade agua caliente y revuelve hasta bien
mezclado.

Cover with plastic wrap and let rest for 10 to
15 minutes.
• Tapa con plastico envolvo y lejar descanso
para 10 - 15 minutos.

Stir the egg yolk and butter into the dough.
• Revuelve yema de huevo y la mantequilla entrar en la masa.

Turn dough out onto counter and knead grated
cheese into the dough until well blended.
• Pon la masa en mostrador y amasa queso rallado
en la masa hasta bien mezcla.

Separate the dough into 10 pieces, and roll each
piece into a ball.
• Separa la masa en 10 pedazos y rolla cada
pedazo en la bola.

Place ball of dough between 2 pieces of plastic
wrap and flatten with the bottom of a pot until they are about 3 1/2 inches in
diameter and 1.5 inch thick.
• Pon la bola de la masa entre 2 pedazos del

Melt a half tablespoon of butter in a heavy
skillet and cook arepas in batches, adding more butter if necessary. They
should cook about 5 minutes on each side, so that the outside is dry and
crusted, and the inside is creamy and soft.

Reflection
In this project, the Spanish language was heavily used in
recipes and in the odes. Making the translations for my ode was very difficult
for me because I really had to incorporate my knowledge of the language and put
it to use. Learning about the country my recipe came from was so much fun because
I got to see the history of the culture and the different types of food they
eat. Making my dish was also a lot of fun, I was able to use new ingredients
that I've never used before, such as corn flower. If I had to do anything
different next time, I would think about putting extra study time into the
country that I'm learning about. I'm proud of creating my dish and getting an
idea of what the food is like in Spanish speaking countries.
Arte y Legua
This project is about learning about Spanish art styles and putting our Spanish skills to the test!
The project involved making an art piece inspired by a Spanish artist and creating an artist statement that talks about what art piece I was inspired by and how it relates to my project. The artist statement had to be completely in Spanish which did some good on my Spanish writing skills.
Reflection
This project really opened my eyes to the Spanish speaking world. I never knew how much there was to learn and how much perseverance and refinement it will take to become fluent in it. I really enjoyed creating my art piece, not only did I love the culture that inspired it, but the fact I was able to create such a similar piece to my artist's. The artists that I chose was Salvador Dali, his surrealist art inspired me to not be afraid to draw something strange, something that I may only understand. This project was fun, but it did have it's challenges, writing sentences in Spanish really isn't my strong area, so writing a page long artist statement was a huge challenge for me. But with some practice and some trial and tribulation, alas! My final artist statement was a success!! If I could do anything different next time, I would probably set aside more time to get my paper done, then I could revise more and make the paper beautiful!

This project was about creating a children's book in Spanish! I used the skills that I learned in Spanish to write two books. One being about living in Durango and one about living in a Spanish speaking country. There were three choices -- Boivia/Guatemala/Chile. I chose Santiago, Chile.

Project Reflection
I’m proud of this project because it’s taken so much hard work and time to get it to be the product that it turned out to be. This book was the first one that I’ve ever made and the first time that I had really applied my Spanish skills in life. Going out into the community and showing people my Spanish skills was really cool and it made me feel like learning Spanish means something.
If I were to do this project again, what I would do differently would write my story directly in Spanish so I don’t have to do twice the work for the same result. It would save me a lot of time and work.
My takeaways from this project would be Spanish vocabulary skills. At the beginning of this project, I didn’t know very much about Spanish vocabulary and I had to use it during the project. Using those skills has helped me get better at them and has given me a really cool final product.
Exhibition with the Del Alma kids!
Del Alma Reflection
The exhibition at Park Elementary School was for the Del Alma kids. They are mostly native Spanish speakers. The book was created so I can read it to the kids there and they would be able to understand it. The exhibition was so much fun! Reading my book to the little kids was fun because they would want to interact with the story by turning the pages and pointing out fun colors of shapes. Overall, the exhibition was fun and I was able to show my Spanish book to the community.
